SAFE HOUSE
We support two safehouses in low-income settlements in Underberg and Himeville, which hold high rates of unemployment and violence. These houses, which have become an integral part of the social fabric, provide refuge for people in emergency situations, and offer many forms of support to getting people back on their feet. The houses are run by well-trained, well respected families within the surrounding communities. The houses have close networks with local support structures, such as social workers, doctors and BE YOUR OWN HERO South Africa, ensuring appropriate assistance is provided.
Thanks to the excellent work of its resident family, the safe house in Himeville has developed beyond its role as a refuge into a contact point for many people seeking help in the area. Support is available around the clock, and material donations such as clothing and hygiene items are always available. People in emergency situations are connected with government agencies. And children found without responsible adults often find their first secure refuge in the Clouds of Hope children’s village. The houses also provide childcare and feeding programmes for the community, with warm meals being especially vital in cold winter months.
In order to ensure the sustainability of this project, we are looking for future sponsors, who will help to ensure that the existing houses are well maintained and equipped, and to enable the establishment of further houses in other townships in our region. We are seeking new members of the team to bring support and ideas to solve our existing challenges. Donations of food are also appreciated.
